French Program

French instruction at First Steps begins early and stays consistent. Rather than introducing French as an isolated unit in one or two grade levels, we build on it year over year, so students develop familiarity and grow confidence with the language throughout their time at First Steps.

From learning foundational vocabulary and simple phrases to reading, writing, and communicating in French, students develop a genuine relationship with the language.

Why French Matters

Learning a second language at a young age strengthens cognitive development across the board. Studies consistently show that bilingual students demonstrate stronger problem-solving skills, better memory, and greater ability to focus. In Canada, French proficiency is also a meaningful advantage for post-secondary education and future careers.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

First Steps is proud to be a school where families feel genuinely at home. Many of our students arrive having spoken little to no English. They are navigating a new school, a new country, and an entirely new language all at once.

Our ESL program gives young English language learners the support they need to build language skills with confidence. English becomes a bridge to participation in the classroom rather than a wall standing in the way.

What Our ESL Program Provides

A Safe Space to Learn.

Learning a language requires the willingness to try, make mistakes, and try again. Our classrooms are warm, respectful environments where students feel safe enough to do exactly that.

Integration with Core Academics.

The goal of ESL support at First Steps is to equip students to participate fully. Language instruction is connected to what students are learning in their regular classes so that progress in English translates directly into progress across all subjects.

A Welcoming Community.

Students from different backgrounds, cultures, and languages learn together and from each other to build the kind of understanding and respect that lasts a lifetime.
