Gifted and Talented (G.A.T.) Hub

Red Deer's Only Dedicated Gifted & Talented Hub

For academically gifted students, the standard classroom, even a great one, is rarely enough on its own. First Steps Elementary Academy is the only school in Red Deer to offer a dedicated Gifted and Talented (G.A.T.) Hub, a formally structured Special Education program designed to meet the unique and often complex needs of gifted learners.

What is the G.A.T. Hub?

The G.A.T. Hub is a specialized program for students who have been formally diagnosed as gifted and who are excelling in their regular classroom. It is designed as a Special Education program, purpose-built to address the unique academic, intellectual, and social-emotional needs that come with giftedness.

Students who qualify attend the G.A.T. Hub one day per week with a dedicated alternate teacher, while continuing their regular classroom instruction the remaining four days. That one day is focused entirely on pushing gifted learners in ways their regular curriculum cannot.

What Students Do in the G.A.T. Hub

Higher thinking

Students engage with concepts at a level of complexity that goes beyond grade-level expectations. They are analyzing, evaluating, synthesizing, and forming independent conclusions rather than simply recalling or applying information.

Research and independent inquiry

Students develop the habits of a genuine researcher: forming questions, finding and evaluating sources, drawing evidence-based conclusions, and communicating their findings with clarity and depth.

Project-based learning

Learning is anchored in real, meaningful projects that require effort, creative problem-solving, and the application of skills across multiple subjects. Students finish with the confidence that comes from doing hard work well.

Challenges

Every G.A.T. Hub experience is designed to challenge. Gifted students are rarely challenged to meet their potential in a standard classroom. The G.A.T. Hub exists specifically to change that.

Why a Dedicated Program Matters

Giftedness is a Special Education designation.

Gifted students think differently, learn differently, and often experience the world differently from other students. Without the right environment and level of challenge, gifted learners can disengage, underperform, or develop habits that work against them because the work around them never required their full effort.

The G.A.T. Hub addresses this directly.

One dedicated day per week with a specialist teacher who understands gifted learners makes a measurable difference in how gifted students experience school.

Combined with the small class sizes and daily one-on-one instruction that every First Steps student receives, gifted students here are supported across the full week.

Is the GAT Hub Right for Your Child?

If your child consistently finishes work ahead of their peers, asks questions that go beyond what the class is covering, or comes home from school feeling unchallenged and restless, the GAT Hub may be exactly what they need.

We invite you to book a tour and have a conversation with us about your child. Together, we can talk through what you're observing and whether the GAT Hub is the right fit.
